Well I've only ever had one cat, and one dog (plus a handful of goldfish) in my lifetime. But thankfully they never seemed that interested in each other, unless they were having secret liaisons while we were all asleep. But I think he would of noticed if Henry the cat started walking funnily. tongue Sadly they both died of natural causes, but they had long and happy lives, free of other siblings and Olaf the turtle trying to get a swift one out of them.

It seems that the Monument has been all about loss at the moment. So I here by errect the Monument's monument Of Deceased Pets erected in loving memory of all household creatures that have bought us so much happiness over the years, be it by eating fruit or being a fruit (I don't know if that joke will travel over to American?!?) but can sadly be no longer with us:

    Blue, the turtle
    P2, the cockatiel
    Jane, the hamster
    Puff, the cat
    Faust, the cat (MIA)
    Sunkist, the cat (MIA)
    Henry, the cat
    Bilbo, the dog

Add you own pets name and their memory will live forever.....

I have been blessed to grow up with dogs and cats. Our dog, Scooter, was the sweetest kindest dog in the whole wide world. I mean, this dog did no wrong. She lived until she was 13 years old; she had a stroke and could not walk well after that. It took us several years to get another dog b/c Scooter was such a part of the family.

We also had a lot of great kitties. The vast majority of our cats were great - not fussy or picky at all. My cat, Onyx, was like a kid and let me carry him around like a baby! I used to take naps on the couch, and he would lie on my legs, on his back and nap too. He was hysterical!

I miss those two but love my pets now tremendously. Zoe (our dog) is like my mom's third child; she always has to be the center of attention but is very endearing. Phoebe (our cat) is such a great kitty. I think she is particularly fond of me because I'm the one who took her in (she was a stray living behind our house).

This thread is making me really appreciate my pets!

Are we telling all our funny cat stories now? OK, here's a gooder. I used to have two cats, Barnabus and Garfield. They were from the same litter and they were real close. One day, the were sleeping all cuddled up and Barnabus started putting the moves on Garfield. It was OK for a while, Barnabus just licking around Garfield's neck, all very innocent cat behavior. Then Barnabus positioned himself for something a little more, er, intimate. Garfield was not impressed. They weren't such good friends after that...

ROTFL! Oh god! That reminds me!

Ok, I also have a cat named Dax. (I'm a fan of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. So I named her after Jadzia Dax when she was born.) Before we could get her fixed, she when into heat 3 different times. Bunny, who is a orange short hair female and a daughter of Chaos, is the dominate cat in our house. Buffy, who's the only tom, is just to damn laid back. When Dax went into heat she would come onto Bunny. It didn't matter that Bunny was female, she was the dominate cat, and Dax was just going by instinct after all. Bunny would freak. Now Dax is a very quite cat, she'll peep when she wants human food, and when you step on her she meows, but when she was in heat, she made this beautiful trilling sound. Mom was kinda sorry to have to get her fixed, 'cause she hasn't made that sound since.

    Unhappy

    (PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT)
Never, ever buy box turtles from pet stores, or any other type of turtle for that matter. They are wild caught animals and have a greater risk of carrying dormant illnesses that can be spread to you and other reptiles. This wild capture also decimates the natural wild population.

Now that I'm done with my Steve Irwin impression. Oh, wait, here comes another.

    WHAT A LITTLE BEAUTY!

ahem. A few years ago we felt sorry for some pet store box turtles and we bought them. When we brought them home they infected some of our other turtles(despite an extensive quarantine) . Most of them didn't make it. frown Blue was a captive bred turtle, but we think the tank conditions killed him because he was so small.

Rufus the Red eyed box turtle
    Monticello (Monti) the box turtle
    Samoa (Sammy) the box turtle
    Sprite the box turtle
    Rudy the box turtle

~growls at Mit~ No insulting my cats! tongue

Anyway we had a dog too. Her name was Skeeter, she and one of my other cats named Tiger, were very close. I swear the dog thought she was a cat and vice versa. Tiger could jump fences. He would be down the block, you yell "kitty, kitty" and he'd come running up the street and jump over our fence. Bunny, can climb fences. She'll climb the trelis we have and sit on the top of the door frame. She'll also climb down the trelis. Skeeter was hit by a car one night, she died, one of the neibor's told me the next morning and moved her out of the street for us.

Mousey-Mouse, we had a little snapper named Chub, and oddly enough we took him for walks too! (We let him go in a small stream b/cause snappers do poorly in captivity) In fact, all of our turtles get walks. They are really good at hiding and digging in under mulch and grass. They are also really good climbers.

I bet Fred found some small pond and he's busy terrorizing children's fingers! CHOMP!

BlueElfEars, I'm so sorry to hear about your turtle. frown I haven't been around the past couple of days because I had a few tests that I had to study for. I, too, once had a turtle. He was a snapping turtle named Fred. I used to take him for walks (yes, walks, I walked the dog, so why not my turtle...hey, I was seven, ok?). One day, I had him out in the backyard, and my mother called me into the house for a second. I was sure that Fred would be ok, him being a turtle and all, I thought he wouldn't really go anywhere. I was wrong. I left him alone for less than 3 minutes, and he was gone. Our backyard is BIG and at the time only had a couple trees in it, so nowhere for a turtle to hide. I called out a search party consisting of all the neighborhood kids and their parents. Noone found a trace of him, not even a shell. To this day, I have no idea what happened to him. Hopefully he's in turtle heaven, with Blue now.

    Speaking of snaping turtles....

Okay, my step dad and some of his friends were in San Marcos (which is a town north of me.) and they decided to go tubing down the river. They got tire tubes and drinks and set off down the river. One of the girls saw a stream of bubbles traveling upriver towards them, and freaked. "Butts in the air!" she yelled.
My stepdad didn't know why she did this, but he was willing to do whatever the girls wanted to do after enough of those drinks.
He balanced on his inner tube in such a way that none of him was in the water. So did everyone else... but not his friend Bob.
Bob asked why. She said "See the bubbles? That means a snapping turtle! Do you want to get bit?"
Bob laughed and said that no snapper would attack something bigger than itself.
That was when he screamed and jumped out of the water. A snapper the size of a hubcap had clamped down hard on his butt.
Everybody scrambled to the river bank and tried to get the turtle off of Bob's butt, but it was no good -- the turtle had clamped down hard enough to punch thru his skin and wasn't going to let go.
They tried whacking the turtle across the shell, and my stepdad ran to the car and got a tire iron. Hitting the turtle didn't do any good, and when they tried to pry the turtle's jaws open, it clamped down tighter and Bob was howling his butt off, so to speak.
A passerby in the park saw what was going on, and told them to get some gasoline and pour it in the turtle's mouth; that was the only way to make it let go.
They tried it with beer first, and that didn't seem to work, so they went and got some gas, and sure enough, when they splashed it in the turtle's mouth, the turtle let go and tried to bite everyone else; by then, they had it by the tail, though, and my stepdad threw it back in the river.
My stepdad says that to this day, Bob still has a triagle-shaped scar on his butt...
